In these tough economic times, pet owners should not be forced to forgo their pet's health because they can't afford vaccinations, according to the Michigan Humane Society.

Today, the group is to hold the first of its 20th annual series of Protect-A-Pet clinics for owners who can't afford to vaccinate their pets.
The five clinics will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturdays. Today's will be in Hazel Park at the Department of Public Works yard, 24211 Couzens.
Dogs and cats older than 6 weeks can be vaccinated to protect against distemper, parvovirus, rabies and other diseases. The vaccinations will cost $3 each and ID microchipping will be offered for $10.
Future clinics will be held in Detroit -- April 24 in Palmer Park, May 15 in Clark Park, June 19 in Balduck Park and July 24 at Canine to Five, 3443 Cass Ave.
Pet owners must present evidence of low income such as proof that they receive unemployment benefits, family assistance or disability benefits. Only cash or check payments will be accepted.
