Canine-Crazed Couple Pays $155,000 to Clone Dead Dog In Life by Sam Fitzpatrick , on Wednesday, May 09, 2012, 5:00 AM (PDT) Glory Days: Edgar Otto and the original Sir Lancelot, in happier times. . Giving a Whole New Meaning to Puppy Love Perhaps Edgar and Nina Otto have never seen Pet Sematary. Or maybe they have and they really liked it. Either way, the couple paid $155,000 to clone the DNA of their late beloved Yellow Labrador, Sir Lancelot, and the new version, Lancelot Encore, is now getting his poop scooped in Boca Raton, just like his predecessor did. The Ottos and their story will be featured on TLC's I Cloned My Pet on May 21. The wealthy couple -- Edgar is the son of one of the co-founders of NASCAR -- submitted the winning bid at an auction with BioArts, a San Francisco biotech company that performed the process in South Korea. Sir Lancelot died of cancer in 2008 at 11-years-old. After saving a sample of his genetic material, the wheels were put in motion for the cloning process. Just months later, his cuddly replacement was scampering off a plane at Miami International Airport. So was "Lancy" worth the cash? "It's as close as you can get," said Mr. Otto. "This dog was immediately accepted by the nine (other) dogs. There was no baring of the teeth, not even a single growl." But hey, is there really much to growl about when you're chillin with a pack of Snausages on a 12-acre compound in South Florida? http://www.limelife.com/blog-entry/CanineCrazed-Couple-Pays-155000-to-Clone-Dead-Dog-/139283.html
That's a lot of money. Sentimental attachments notwithstanding, I would not slam down that kind of cash. Then again if I had BILLIONS collecting dust, I would have cloned Lobo and maybe bought a small Caribbean island to throw a party and celebrate on, so to each their own.
How does everyone feel about this.... I hate reading to be honest, but I would like everyone's insight. My thought is driving in circles "nascar" is stupid lol. I can get drunk and do that very well. Really though How does everyone feel about cloned animals or ever babies?>? Is that Hitler flipping a bird?
I don't care for NASCAR either. Can't get into the whole driving in circles thing, but the wrecks are pretty entertaining! I'm OK with cloning animals. I believe that a lot of good can come from it. For example, if you have a superlative example of any animal, it would benefit that species gene pool to have that cloned animal included. Since all biologic lifeforms have a lifespan, the cloned animal would be able to continue to contribute to the gene pool after the original donor has passed on. Another place where I can see a future for animal cloning is in the food supply industry. I'm not sure where I am with respect to human cloning. There are ethical questions that are not easy to answer. Some medical cloning such as adult stem cell research has yielded marvelous new discoveries that help people live better lives. Hitler tried to engineer a "Master Race" by manipulating bloodlines. I know that's putting it mildly, but to me, that is not the same thing as cloning.
I hate watching sports of any kind....I'm the type that likes to play, not be a spectator. Nascar holds no interest for me...although I know there are scads of people that absolutely love it. BORING. I would never clone anything....it will never be the original dog completely, and it reminds me of that movie "Pet Semetary"
